NEWS 30 June 2011 - New agreement with Chinese distributor
The Deer Industry Association of Australia (DIAA) own
Australian Deer Horn & Co Products Pty Ltd (ADH&CP) who operate the Velvet
Pools on behalf of all Australian deer farmers on a non profit basis.
The pools have been operating since 1990, originally in Brisbane but moved
to Melbourne in 1994. Originally the pools provided an outlet for
farmers with small quantities of mixed velvet to have their product graded
and combined with other farmers into saleable quantities, thereby returning
more favourable prices.
Whilst we still have some farmers inputting small quantities we now have
farmers putting up to two tonnes into the pools. It is generally
accepted that ADH&CP handle approximately 50% of all Australian velvet.

One main advantage that the pools provide is that all farmers receive
a grading sheet showing the weight and grades of all
product they provide plus general comments re: timing of cut, presentation,
etc.
The grading information has had a impact on the quality of velvet over the
years to the point that XXX% of the pool are now premium grades.
The pools also pay all levies on the farmers behalf to the government Levies
Management Unit thereby cutting down the farmer's paper work and possible
fines for non-payment by some road buyers, as the levies are farmer's
responsibility not the road buyers.
